Why You MUST Cultivate Innovation for Leaders Innovation means “a new idea, device or method” and the act there of. If you are a leader, you want to encourage innovation. It doesn’t matter what kind of leader you are, whether you lead a team of bright people in business, a student leader, or a leader of a community groupâ€"you are a leader. If you want to succeed, you will have to foster an environment of innovation. Why innovation is important: Innovation equals growth. If you run a business that sells a product or a service, innovation can help with the creation of new products, better your services, and streamline your day to day work tasks. Also, innovation can grow your organization perhaps with fund-raising ideas or other ideas to make your group fulfill its mission better.  Innovation can make life better for everyone. Not only does innovation help a business grow, it also allows for better work environment and better teamwork. If your employees or group know that you want to hear what they think, they will come to with their ideas. They will be able to communicate better with you, not just about how to make something better but if there are troubles you are unaware of. When you open your door for them to talk, you will be a better leader. Just listening to your group will make them feel like they are appreciated and valued and they are more likely to work to the best of their ability because they will feel their effort is worth it. Innovation doesn’t just equal growth but communication and team work. How to cultivate innovation: You know innovation is important, but how do you start creating an environment that induces creative and innovative thinking. The first starts with you as the leader to have the desire to have creative thought. Tell your group in plain words that you want them to come to you with their ideas.  If you are a new leader to the group or team or you are trying to become a better leader, make your intentions known. Physically tell them you want to hear about their ideas and make sure to send a group email letting them know your door is open and you are looking forward to hearing what they have to say. This basic step will start the communication between you and your members. Encourage cross-training.  In an article from Business News Daily, innovative people will draw ideas from learning new skills. If your people want to attend extra school, be sure to encourage it but also encourage your team to learn other skills at the business. For example, you are a company that makes plastic pieces and some of your executives have not been on the factory floor or ever worked in a factory setting. Have them learn a worker’s job because maybe just doing the job, a fresh, new idea will come to light that may increase productivity without making more work for the workers. Share interesting articles on innovation and creativity.  When you find an interesting article that talks about creativity or how to be innovative, share it with your team and encourage the same from your group members.  Not only does this encourage communication but it reinforces your aim to be an innovative group. Perhaps one of your team members reads an article and they try one of the helpful hints, he or she just might come up with an idea that will blow your socks off. That one idea was a disaster, what now? Not every idea is a gold mine and there will be some that will fail.  You don’t want to say “failure is not an option” instead you want to say, “failure could be an option but we can bounce back.” Of course, as the leader you take the calculated risk into all the ideas brought to you. Some of the risks may not be as big as others and it’s up to you and your team to decide if something is worthy of the risk.  Things happen; the best idea can flop.  The first thing you want to do is ask “what went wrong and how can we fix this?” One of the oldest sayings is you learn from mistakes or failure is a learning experience. Be sure to make those old adages your motto when something doesn’t go as hoped. Ask your team, “how to make the problem better.”  You and your team take the failure together, don’t point fingers or blame someone else.  If you all take the responsibility of the failure then you all will work harder to make the problem better and come out ahead.  Being a good leader is to take the failure and rise from the ashes just like the phoenix. Think about the people under youâ€"think about what they bring to the workplace. Every single one of those people brings something unique to the group, appreciate who they are and what they want to accomplish, and the common goal will be easier to see. Innovation is about ideas, large or small that can take a business or a group to the next level, which is the common goal for you and your team. It’s up to you to make the decision to bring the group togetherâ€"open lines of communication and let your people talk to you and give you ideas. With an environment that encourages creative thinking, you will be a leader that people will want to work with and your people will want to stay with you instead of looking for a better position. That could include the cute guy or gal you’re flirting with on OKCupid. And, experts estimate: only one-third of your Twitter followers are likely human. Who’s taken the place of people â€" or more accurately, who’s the Bimbot that’s been posing as your potential soulmate and the Socialbot that’s been retweeting you? It’s just a software program according to Filippo Menczer, an Indiana University professor and principal investigator for the university’s research program, named Truthy. You may not have been Punked by Ashton Kucher. You may not have been Daft Punked, as was Stephen Colbert. But, you probably have been Manti Te’o’d by a random bot. Remember the Notre Dame football star that spent years on the phone with a man who was pretending to be a woman, who was pretending to fall in love, and then have a car accident, leukemia and then die? The new social bots are programmed to have a life. I just watched Tom Cruise as the “man or bot technician” in Oblivion, so it’s a little easier to imagine right now. The social bots tweets are programmed to mimic a regular sleep cycle (when they are off social media), little idiosyncrasies, and even a family, work and school history. The more involved versions have matching profiles on FB, Reddit or 4sq. But, it’s not the intricacies of their made up personas that are awesome. It’s their purpose. These bots are created to sway the results of elections, dissuade political uprisings by giving the appearance of a movement to support governments’ policies, as well as the more expected and mundane: take your money. Whether its for faux charity or getting some of your cash to help a would-be romantic liaison make their rent: armies of bots are taking up your time, space and potentially financial resources. The big issue for personal brands is this, so be careful how you are spending your social media time. The bots can engage you in conversation, arguments, causes and more. If you are dedicating lots of time to one-on-one interactions with people you don’t otherwise know or can verify has DNA: you may be wasting precious time. If only one-third of your tweeps really are human: cut down your estimate of your Klout score or Twitalyzer. One social media expert engaged bots and came up more influential than Oprah. There’s also a big upside if you still have a small circle, compared to personal brands that are swinging big numbers in your area of expertise. You can tell yourself: it’s just the bots, baby. Trying to Develop a Writing Process Expert Insights Here! - Ive been asked about my writing process many times, so here it is, short and sweet, messy and chaotic: 1. First, I think up all sorts of bad ideas for my books. My editor and agent are good enough to tell me that they are bad ideas. I think up more ideas. Theyre still bad. 2. FINALLY, I have a good-ish idea. My agent and my editor like it. I celebrate by eating chocolate. 3. I start driving in the country. I garden. I daydream. I walk and walk. Why? I need the first line of my book. I do not write a book without knowing that first line. I wait for it to magically pop into my head. Like a spell. Or a curse. 4. Next, I write 2,000 words a day, 10,000 words a week, or I dont go to bed on Saturday night. Ive had some real late Saturday nights. But I have to set goals, or that dang book will not get written, friends, no, it wont. Why? Because I would rather play than work. I would rather hang out with Innocent Husband and The Kids. I would rather call my laughing sisters and my dear brother. Writing books is haaaard. (Whine, sob, sniffle.) 5. When the first draft is done, I goal set again. I edit five single spaced pages a day. All of those pages are a total, complete mess. Theyre an embarrassment. The writing is terrible. I told Innocent Husband that if a gargantuan stork ever carries me off and my book is still in draft form, he is to have a nice bonfire with it. When Ive edited the whole wretched book at five pages a day, I move to ten pages a day, to fifteen a day, etc. Yes, it is brain-numbing. 6. I edit all my books eight or nine times before theyre off to my agent and editor. Right about the sixth draft I start thinking I should have been a carpenter. 7. I edit again with my editors comments, then through copy editing and proofreading. Its about 12 times total. Did I mention the brain-numbing part? 8. When I finally send that edited book off, I get myself a mocha and sit and relax and go back to day dreaming. Looking for a job Use old-fashioned marketing techniques - be where they are! - The other day, I was in our local Target Super StoreSchool starts today where I live in Atlanta, so the store was packed with school-supply shopping parents and kids. Clearly, the area with the most traffic was in the back corner, with bins of Elmers glue, Crayola crayons and a slew of other must haves for school kids. While rummaging through 6-for-a-dollar bins of glue sticks, I was surprised by a rolling food cart. The woman from the deli was bringing her wares to the back of the store samples of deli meat. If you bought something, you received a free package of cheese. Since it seems as if every experience I have turns into a lesson for job seekers, it struck me that the lesson of the deli cart is simple: Go where the people are! The majority of shoppers that day were tending to spend time in the back of the store, maybe skipping the deli counter. Bringing the deli counter to the people was a great idea, and I am sure many people bought something they might not have considered as a result. So, if you are looking for a job, are you going where you are likely to encounter people who can positively influence your search? Some ideas: Regular readers know I love to suggest using Twitter for the job hunt. If youre on Twitter, you are in a space full of others like you, CEOs, coaches and a slew of people who may have common interests. Its a place where there is a community for everyone. Even cat lovers! Everyone is a potential contact. If you are not there, you miss out. LinkedIn. This is a given. If you dont have an optimized LinkedIn profile, its going to be tough for all of those recruiters who are sourcing there to find you! In-person meetings. Have you joined the local chapters of professional development groups in your field? (And do you attend their meetings?) Have you looked up Meetup.com in your area? How about your alumni organization? Dont discount social groups that have nothing to do with your job hunt or professional interest. You never know who you might meet at a backyard barbeque or at the local swimming pool. Go where people you DONT think can help you go! What ideas do you have for meeting people where they are? Its just as important for people marketing their skills and accomplishments to be in the right place at the right time as it is for merchants to target their customers with their products.
